How to check a chauffeur company before you book
- Operator licence. In England and Wales a chauffeur firm must hold a private hire operator licence from its local council (in London, from TfL); in Scotland, from the council; in Northern Ireland, a taxi operator licence from the DfI. Licensed firms print the licence number on the website or quote it on request.
- Vehicle and driver licensing. Each car should carry a private hire vehicle licence and each driver a private hire driver licence, with an enhanced DBS check. Ask which council issued them.
- Insurance. Hire-and-reward insurance is mandatory; ask for confirmation in writing if you are booking for a company or a wedding.
- A fixed quote. Chauffeur work is normally quoted as a fixed price for the journey or an hourly rate with a minimum, including waiting time at the airport and parking. Get it in writing before the day.
- Meet and greet. For airport pick-ups check whether the driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, how long the free waiting time is after landing, and how flight delays are handled.
- Payment and cancellation. Established firms take card payment and set out cancellation terms; be cautious with cash-only operators or deposits to personal accounts.
